This building was where the first vet I ever took my cat to used to be ... between Broadway and Amsterdam on W. 75th Street. They smashed it and took it away brick by brick. That building behind stands where a grand high-ceilinged warehouse space used to be. It housed, among other things, my favorite restaurant, Ernie’s. That went away in 2003 when Bloomberg got the smoking ban passed. Asshole. Then they tore down the building to put up rental apartments and a Duane Reade. Because you can’t have enough of those!

I’m ok with losing New York.

We could also see fit to lose some parts of California as well...

Yeah, I know those feelz. They shut Associated Supermarket on 14th Street so I can no longer get a cheap lunch close to work, Manhattan pisses me off a lot these days.

New York’s greatest strength is that It continously re-invents itself.

unfortunately it looks like the Taylor swift crew is steering the ship right now.

Connecticut’s economy is in the toilet, but the crummy economy means there’s tons of little gems like you described that would never survive in Manhattan these days. The 90s were the time to be in NYC.

H&H Bagel was replaced by a Verizon store. Not a fan.

I think the smoking ban was the greatest thing ever. I cannot stand cigarette smoke, even in outdoor settings or in traffic. It is especially revolting while trying to hang out indoors like at a bar. Now sure, people should have the freedom to kill themselves how they please but the reasonable compromise is always do that outside someplace.

I don’t smoke. While I am for keeping people safe from second-hand smoke, I am not in favor of punishing smokers. Have a smoking bar that’s labeled as such. Or have a smoking section with an exhaust hood. Lots of businesses went away because of BBG.

While I'm in favor of making cigarettes about as illegal as cocaine, what you are saying makes good sense. I like the idea of an exhaust hood or some other compromise. And a place like NYC, I could see a lot of the hole in the wall type places definitely suffered from that.

In Tokyo recently, and a friend lit up in a restaurant ... you can do that. It was a surprise. We are not used to that.

Oh yeah, especially since the law changed before I turned 21 so pretty much 100% of my experiences being in a bar have been smoke free. So it's really confusing to go to bars in Europe and just get hit with the wall of smoke when you walk in.

I’m quite a bit older, so I’m used to it. Back in 2004 I went down to DC to argue a motion. Went to my favorite bar to get a burger and a beer. Woman sits down next to me, unwraps a pack of cigarettes, and lights up. I went whhaaaaaa? Oh right - no smoking ban in DC ... yet.
